On Monday we spent several hours meeting with 2 leaders in Delhi who are responsible for thousands of churches around the nation.
Both of these men are very familiar with much of the missions history in India as well as very networked into the SCP strategy currently among many movements today.

510 kingdoms that British brought together. Men of a generation before this one would never have said they were Indian, only recently have they began to define themselves under this unified terminology.

It's best to think of India as countries like those in the EU. Very different, various cultures, languages, religions and traditions.

In South Asia 50% of unreached groups are in 10/40 window. Of these 639 unreached people groups; 310 are in India.

India should be considered federation of countries.
456 language groups. 1500 dialects
429 with less than 1,000 people
15 scripts(most languages not written)

70% of Indian Christians live in cities.
70% of Indians live in villages
300 cities over 100,000 but make up only 10% of pop.

In the past ten years local churches have been getting a vision for sending missionaries and planting churches.

Indian Gov't says India is 2.6% Christian
New York times said 6.2%

Many know that 2.6% is low but concrete figures are difficult to get. For example in one area they have data from they know -
Andrea Pradesh went from 4%-18% christian.
Our brothers estimate figures are 2/3 percent higher than govt statistics.
6-7% Christian....80 million
And more than 500,000 churches.
400,000+ Christian workers in country.

Challenges for India:
1) Pursue the Extensive (unreached cities / regions) while plugging the gaps of the Intensive (people group reaching / filling in the areas that have church presence)
2) Equipping leaders especially in N. India
